Meet the IQE Team | Matthew Smith

28th October 2021

Want to learn more about the great people who work for us? Meet our amazing employees who are the driving force behind our business and are working hard to ensure we create a safe and sterile single use endoscopy platform.

We quizzed our Engineering Manager Matthew on what it’s like to work at IQE…

Name: Matthew Smith

Job title: Engineering Manager

Matthew in 3 words (as chosen by his colleagues):

Affable. Diligent. Engaging.

What is your role and responsibilities at IQE?

I am responsible for the design and development of IQ Endoscopes’ range of single use endoscopic devices. This encompasses technology scouting, concept and detailed design, testing and risk management. As a small company, we also all chip in with everything that is going on!

What is your previous experience?

I did my PhD at the University of Leeds in collaboration with St. James’ hospital, researching new methods for cell culturing, including manufacturing substrates for 3D cultures.

Since then I have been working in the medical device industry, addressing design and manufacturing challenges. I have experience working in established companies and with clinicians in European hospitals to develop custom devices in compliance with the new MDR regulations.

What is it like working for a start-up company?

Working in a start-up has been refreshing as it has allowed me to take ownership of the design process and have more influence on key decisions. There is the opportunity to combine skills from my professional engineering and research background. We work on (and tend to overcome) a range of challenges. Everyone knows each other and the whole company is working towards the same target which is great.

What has been your favourite project to work on so far?

We are specifying a new engineering workshop/test space which is really cool to plan all the testing and prototyping we will be doing and finding the right machines and components for the job.

How do you spend your free time?

I recently bought a house so I have a lot of DIY to do. Other than that I play a few different sports and enjoy going to big events (especially this year after lockdown cancelled them all).
